In person is faster
Applying at a Service Canada office means you get your SIN the same day. Online applications take longer, so go in person if you need it soon.
What to bring
Your original passport and your study or work permit. No copies or photos — Service Canada requires original documents.
For students
You need a SIN to work on or off campus. You also need it to receive tax benefits like the GST/HST credit — even if you're not working. Get it done early, it only takes about 30 minutes in person.
