Register for Fair PharmaCare
Description
MSP covers doctors and hospitals, but it doesn't cover prescription drugs. Fair PharmaCare is a BC program that reduces the cost of prescription medicine based on your income. Registration is free and ensures you don't pay full price for medications.

mail-in form required for first-year residents
What to do
1.
Wait until your MSP is fully active (usually Month 3)
2.
Register online for Fair PharmaCare via the BC Government website
3.
As a new resident, you must complete the 'Proof of Income Affidavit' because CRA has no record of your 2024 income
4.
Have the affidavit notarized at a Service BC office (minimal fee) and mail the original to the PharmaCare office
5.
Once processed, give your PHN to any pharmacist — your discounts will be applied automatically at the counter
Warnings
The 'Out of Pocket' phase
- Fair PharmaCare has a deductible based on income. You pay for drugs until you reach that limit, then the government pays 70–100%
- If you don't register, your deductible is set to $10,000 by default — meaning you pay for everything
- Don't wait until you get sick; process the affidavit in your first few months
Tips
Combined with Work Benefits
If you have private insurance from work, Fair PharmaCare acts as a second layer. Always show your BC Services Card AND your insurance card at the pharmacy.
