Save 8-1-1 and Find a Walk-in Clinic

Description

Before you need a doctor, take 5 minutes to save the HealthLink BC number and find your nearest walk-in clinic. In your first months you won't have a family doctor — knowing where to go when you're sick saves you time and stress when you're already not feeling well.

What to do

1. Save 8-1-1 in your phone contacts as 'HealthLink BC'
2. Go to Google Maps and search 'walk-in clinic' near your address
3. Also search 'urgent care centre' near your address — they handle more serious issues than walk-in clinics
4. Check the clinic's hours — many are closed evenings and weekends, and some require online booking
5. Save the clinic's address and phone number in your contacts
6. If you find more than one clinic nearby, save a backup option too

Warnings

Don't go to the Emergency Room for minor issues

  • Emergency rooms in Canada are for life-threatening situations — not colds, fevers, or minor injuries
  • ER wait times can be 4–8 hours for non-urgent cases
  • Walk-in clinics and urgent care centres handle most everyday health issues faster and for free with MSP

Walk-in clinics fill up fast

  • Many walk-in clinics stop accepting new patients by mid-morning even if they're open until evening
  • Some clinics no longer accept true walk-ins and require online booking in advance
  • Call ahead or check online before making the trip
  • Some clinics use an online waitlist — you can join remotely and show up when it's your turn

Tips

Urgent Care vs Walk-in

Walk-in clinics handle everyday issues like colds, skin infections, and prescriptions. Urgent Care Centres handle more serious conditions — minor fractures, breathing issues, or high fever — but are not full emergency rooms. They often have shorter wait times than ERs.

Before MSP kicks in

During the MSP waiting period, walk-in clinic visits may not be covered. Check what your school or employer health plan covers for doctor visits so you're not surprised by a bill.

Pharmacists can help too

Pharmacists in BC can assess and treat minor conditions like infections or allergies, and can prescribe some medications without a doctor visit. If your issue is minor, ask at a pharmacy first — it's often faster than waiting at a clinic.

Virtual care options

BC has free virtual care options where you can see a doctor by video or phone without leaving home. Search 'virtual walk-in clinic BC' or check your school or employer health plan for covered options.

For students

Your school likely has a health centre on campus — this is often the fastest and easiest option for common issues like infections, prescriptions, or mental health support. Find its location and hours before you need it.
