Create a Pre-Arrival Budget Plan

Description

Understand the real cost of settling in Metro Vancouver and build a financial buffer that covers your first 90 days.

In person N/A
Online 30–45 min

What to do

1. Research average monthly costs: rent, groceries, transit, phone, and internet in your target city/neighbourhood
2. Add one-time setup costs: damage deposit (usually half a month's rent), first and last month's rent, bedding, kitchenware
3. Factor in health insurance premiums during the MSP waiting period
4. Build a 30-day emergency buffer on top of your planned expenses
5. Open or verify you have an international debit/credit card with low foreign transaction fees to use on arrival

Warnings

First month costs significantly more

  • Damage deposit + first and last month's rent can mean you pay 3× rent before you even move in.
  • Most landlords require this upfront in cash or certified cheque.

Proof of funds at the border

  • A border officer may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay.
  • Have a recent bank statement or a letter from your sponsor ready.

Tips

Typical monthly costs (Metro Vancouver, 2026)

Shared room: $800–$1,200 | Groceries: $350–$500 | Transit pass: $117.20 (Compass monthly, 1 zone) | Phone: $30–$55 (budget plan) | Internet: $50–$70

Surrey and Langley are cheaper

If your institution or workplace is accessible by SkyTrain or bus from Surrey, you can save $200–$400/month on rent compared to Vancouver proper.

U-Pass for students

Most Metro Vancouver post-secondary students get a discounted U-Pass BC for $47.85/month (September 2026 to August 2027) — confirm with your institution.

Send money before you leave

Wire transfer services like Wise (TransferWise) or Remitly are cheaper than bank wire fees. Consider transferring your first 3 months of funds before departure.
