Download Essential Apps Before You Fly

Description

App stores can be region-locked — some Canadian apps may not be available in your home country's store after you arrive. Download everything you'll need on Day 1 while you still have fast Wi-Fi and your current app store access.

What to do

1. Download Google Maps or Apple Maps and save your destination area offline
2. Download a translation app (Google Translate) and save English as an offline language pack
3. Download ArriveCAN — used for your advance customs declaration before landing
4. Download Uber or Lyft — you may need a rideshare from the airport
5. Download WhatsApp if you don't already have it — widely used in Canada for informal communication

Tips

Switch your app store region after arriving

Once you have a Canadian phone number and bank account, you can switch your App Store (Apple) or Google Play region to Canada. This unlocks Canadian-only apps like some banking and transit apps. Don't switch before you arrive — you may lose access to apps from your home country's store.

Save important information offline

Screenshots are your best friend. Save your flight itinerary, booking confirmation, accommodation address, and emergency contacts as screenshots — accessible without internet.
