What to do

1. Open Facebook and go to Marketplace — search for your city or neighbourhood

2. Search for what you need: 'desk', 'chair', 'lamp', 'dishes', 'bedding'

3. Search Facebook Groups for 'Buy Nothing [your neighbourhood]' and request to join

4. Download the Kijiji app or go to kijiji.ca and set your location

5. When you find something you want, message the seller and agree on a pickup time

6. Always meet in a public place or bring someone with you for the first pickup

Warnings

Scams exist on second-hand platforms

If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is
e-Transfer is common in Canada, but only send it after you see the item in person
Be cautious if a seller asks for a deposit to 'hold' the item — this is a common scam
Avoid sellers who ask you to pay through gift cards, crypto, or wire transfer — these are scams
Legitimate sellers will always agree to meet in person

Check furniture for bedbugs — small brown spots on seams or joints are a red flag

Buy Nothing groups on Facebook are neighbourhood-based groups where people give things away for free — no selling, no trading. Neighbours post furniture, kitchen items, books, clothes, and more. You just comment that you want it and arrange a pickup.

Best things to find second-hand

Desks, chairs, lamps, kitchen items, bedding, small appliances, and bikes are posted constantly. Electronics and phones are also common but require more careful inspection.

Check the seller's profile

On Facebook Marketplace, check how long the account has been active and if it has any history. A brand new or empty profile with no activity is a red flag.

Safe meetup spots

Many police stations in Metro Vancouver have designated 'safe exchange zones' in their parking lots — well-lit, on camera. You can suggest these to sellers for peace of mind.

Kijiji vs Facebook Marketplace
