Book Temporary Accommodation

Description

Secure a safe place to stay for your first 2–4 weeks in BC while you search for permanent housing in person.

In person N/A
Online 30–45 min

What to do

1. Choose a type of temporary accommodation: hostel, international student residence, Airbnb, or short-term furnished rental
2. Confirm the address is reachable by SkyTrain or bus from YVR airport without needing a local SIM card
3. Book for at least 14 nights to give yourself enough time to find and sign a permanent lease
4. Save the confirmation email and address as a PDF — you may need to show it to a border officer
5. Note the check-in process in case you arrive late at night (key lockbox, 24-hour front desk, etc.)

Warnings

Do not sign a long-term lease before arrival

  • Signing a 12-month lease remotely based on photos alone is high risk.
  • Wait until you are in BC and have physically visited the unit before committing.

BC short-term rental rules

  • As of May 2024, many BC municipalities restrict Airbnbs to principal residences only.
  • Verify your booking is at a licensed short-term rental to avoid last-minute cancellations.

Tips

Recommended hostels near transit

HI Vancouver Central (near City Hall SkyTrain) and HI Vancouver Downtown offer affordable dorm and private rooms with kitchen access.

On-campus short-term stays

SFU, UBC, and Langara sometimes offer short-term guest rooms during off-peak periods — contact their housing office well in advance.

Airport proximity

YVR is on the Canada Line SkyTrain — you can reach downtown Vancouver in about 26 minutes or Surrey/Burnaby without a transfer.

Add the address to your IRCC portal

Once you have a confirmed address, update your 'address in Canada' on the IRCC portal or with your employer before you depart.
